A. It is a good idea to be proactive in regards to securing a continuum of services for your son. Raising this question 3 years ahead of his graduation time is a good strategy. Funding is always an issue and the sooner you start planning for your son the better are the chances that he will be considered when funding becomes available.

As a result of the reform in the system, agencies no longer accept independently applicants who need funding. In the current system parents have to approach only one of the service providers in Toronto rather than making many phone calls to secure a spot on a waiting list for their adult children. The agency you call will become a lead agency and will have the responsibility to put your son’s name on the list. If you are interested in a Muki Baum placement for your son you can require that Muki Baum input your son’s name on the Toronto centralized wait list.

A. As part of planning for the future it is a good idea to develop a Life Plan for your child. In a Life Planning process you develop the vision that you, as parents and a family, have for your child’s future. The process incorporates the exploration and determination of your vision and the goals and objectives you feel are important. Within the framework of our person-cantered philosophy we encourage the parents, whenever its possible, to include in the plan their child’s goals, wishes and wants

Every couple of years Muki Baum is conducting workshops for parents who are interested in developing their sons or daughters Life Plans. Please call our Central Office to enquire about the timing of these workshops. Telephone 416-630-2222.

A. The Ministry of Community, Family and Children Services (MCFCS) provides parents with funding for Special Services at home (SSAH). With this funding you would be able to hire a support worker for a few hours a week. The worker will be able to provide your daughter with activities both in the community and at home. In addition to a worker you might find some activities provided by community agencies. Muki Baum organizes dances every couple of weeks. We are also in the planning stages of establishing outreach sensory and art programs in our Sensory Motor Therapy Centre. Some other community agencies, such as Reena, Mary Centre and Meta also conduct afternoon/evening activities for people in the community. You could get in touch with Muki Baum and the other agencies to find out the specific details of the programs and their fees.
