All of us react to environmental conditions that affect us in various ways. Some of us may be sensitive to high levels of sound. Some of us get headaches when we are constantly exposed to strong lights. And some of us react to small spaces that give us a sense of being constrained.

Children and adults with autism and other complex disabilities are even more
sensitive to environmental conditions. In such environments they frequently express their stresses with extreme behaviours such as aggression, screaming, head banging, self injurious behaviours, rocking, twirling and more. They behave like that not because they are bad or defiant. They behave like that because they feel stuck in an environment that is perceived by them to be hostile.

The Centre For Ability was designed to be a friendly and supportive environment within which individuals with such difficulties would feel comfortable and relaxed, thus eliminating their impulse to express their stress via extreme behaviours.

When designing the new building we had to pay specific attention to sound
regulation, light modulation and the overall structural design of the building in order to meet the needs of the children and adults that we serve. The rooms are spacious, the walls are reinforced with MDF panels, the lights do not flicker or hum, the sound is regulated by special acoustic tiles and the colours of the floors and walls are supportive of positive mood and calmness.

The Centre For Ability is a highly specialized environment for very special people. Without these design enhancements the people served at MukiBaum could not cope.
