3rd International Come To Your Senses Conference: Everything Made Perfect Sense
“A Nuturing Environment!” “Informative, passionate!” “Excellent Speakers!” This is just some of the feedback from the 3rd International Come To Your Senses Conference hosted by MukiBaum Treatment Centres from October 21-25th, 2009. Over 170 professionals, parents, caregivers and people with disabilities gathered from around the world and the Toronto community at the Riviera Parque Dining, Banquet & Convention Centre for a five day conference on Creating Supportive Environments to Nurture the Sensory Capital Within.
This year’s conference theme brought with it discussions on technology, holistic therapies, Snoezelen projects, new and developing research and most importantly, the inclusion of personal experience and stories into an ongoing discussion surrounding people with complex disabilities.
We had 5 days of fabulous Keynote Addresses, Hands on Workshops, Paper Presentations, Poster Presentations, Exhibitors and more....over 40 presentations in all! Keynotes included: Dr. Stephen Shore, Dr. Wendy Roberts, Dr. Wendy Edwards, Kathleen Morris, Barbara McCormack, Dr. Peggy Marcon, Dr. Nehama Baum, Dr. Bernie Warren, Eileen and Kim Miller, & Paula Aquilla.
MukiBaum was extremely fortunate this year to have Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor as the featured speaker for An Evening of Inspiration, where she presented “My Stroke of Insight” to over 420 attendees on Saturday night. Dr. Taylor brought the inspirational story of her journey through 9 years of stroke recovery. It was truly an evening of hope for not only those dealing with the affects of a stroke personally or with a loved one, but also to anyone struggling with the challenges life brings on a day to day basis. It was truly a “moment” for everyone present!
