MukiBaum Helping to Raise Money For Recent Earthquake Victims in Haiti
The devastating impact of the recent earthquake in Haiti has caught the entire world’s attention. The desire to assist the Haitian population has never been stronger than it is today. At MukiBaum, our adult day program and Toronto Children’s program have sprung into action and are working hard to help those in need.

Zachary S. at the Toronto Children’s program asked his teacher and classmates if they could do something to help the people of Haiti. He may not have anticipated the enthusiasm that was to follow. Over the course of a few days the entire school was involved. On Friday January the 22nd, 2010, each student brought in a toonie for donation. They have also organized a school dance, a bake sale and are selling freshly popped bags of popcorn. “We have created a big drawing of a thermometer to track our progress” says Laura Pietrangelo, “the kids spent a whole day baking and everyone rushed around in excitement making sure the tables were properly set up.” Classroom four, which typically makes and sells bracelets to raise money for their child sponsor Ferdinand, has been working really hard to make extra bracelets for the people of Haiti. Each child feels a profound sense of fulfilment knowing that they are helping others and are simultaneously learning how to work effectively in a group to reach a common, measurable goal.

In order to be as inclusive as possible, the teachers have set up a table for the students who are non-verbal where they can colour pictures related to their cause. For example, children might draw a picture of the Haitian flag, or an ambulance, to signify the fact that they need emergency assistance. The pictures are then displayed in classrooms as educational decorations for all to see.

Similarly, from the adult day program, Samson Olumola has circulated the building with people that we serve collecting money to help Haitians. He has also created a clothing drive, food drive and has plans to purchase water purification tablets which cost only fifty cents each.

Raising money for those who are in desperate need gives both our staff and the people we serve a sense of satisfaction that they are not powerless and that collectively we can make a difference.
